Craniosacral Therapy (CST)

The Way of Connection: The Body

Listening to Your Child’s Internal Rhythms

Is CST the Right “Doorway” for Your Child?

CST serves as a primary doorway. It is particularly effective for children who:

  • Have experienced birth trauma.

  • Struggle with sensory processing sensitivities.

  • Feel like their nervous system is stuck in "high gear".

The Promise

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on practice that listens to your child’s internal rhythms, releasing deep-seated tension to help their nervous system find its way back to stillness. In the Heal Kids Whole philosophy, we view the body as a self-correcting system that sometimes gets "stuck". CST is a practice of profound Authenticity, allowing the child’s body to lead the healing process rather than forcing a change from the outside.

The Soulful Science

Rooted in Osteopathy, CST was pioneered by Dr. William Garner Sutherland, who discovered that the bones of the skull have a subtle, living motion. In the 1970s, Dr. John Upledger expanded this into the practice we know today, focusing on the rhythmic flow of cerebrospinal fluid.

Studies from the Upledger Institute and clinical observations show that by releasing restrictions in the fascia (connective tissue), CST improves the flow of fluid and energy. This directly impacts the "Rest and Digest" (parasympathetic) nervous system, lowering stress and promoting deep calm.

What to Expect

Unlike traditional massage, CST is non-forceful. Using a touch no heavier than the weight of a small coin, a practitioner engages with the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

The Environment: Your child remains fully clothed. They can play on the floor, sit in your lap, or lie down.

The Touch: The practitioner will place light hands on the head (cranium), the base of the spine (sacrum), or the feet.

The Release: You might notice your child yawning, sighing, or even becoming momentarily fussy. These are "Glimmers of Release,” signs that the body is letting go of a deep-seated restriction.

The Golden Window

A targeted focus for kids aged 6-12

While often associated with infants, CST is a powerful vitality booster for the school-aged child:

The Sensory Reset:For the 8-year-old overwhelmed by the "noise" of the classroom, CST helps the nervous system "slow down" and process information without the fight-or-flight response.

The Emotional Unwind:Older children often carry emotional stress in their physical tissues. In the quiet of a CST session, they may experience a deep "meditative release," helping them let go of anxieties they can’t yet put into words.

The Posture Shift: As kids spend more time hunched over desks or screens, CST releases the structural restrictions in the neck and spine before they become permanent patterns.

Books & Guides

Your Inner Physician and You* by John E. Upledger, D.O., O.M.M.: Written by the founder of CST, this is his most accessible book for non-practitioners, explaining the theory and process behind the work.

Craniosacral Therapy for Children* by Daniel Agustoni: Directly addresses CST application for babies and children up to age 12, covering specific conditions and trauma.

The Out-of-Sync Child* by Carol Stock Kranowitz: Because CST is frequently used as a complementary therapy for Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), this classic book provides the background needed to understand sensory challenges.
