Clinical Hypnosis
The Way of Stillness: Mind & Breath
Harnessing the Power of Focused Imagination
Is Clinical Hypnosis the Right “Doorway” for Your Child?
Clinical Hypnosis serves as a "mastery doorway". It is particularly effective for children who:
Deal with chronic pain, such as functional abdominal pain or migraines
Struggle with specific phobias (needles, dogs, public speaking)
Have ingrained habits like bedwetting or nail-biting
Possess a vivid imagination and enjoy "story-based" problem-solving
The Promise
Clinical Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and increased suggestibility that allows a child to bypass their "critical filter" and access their internal resources for healing and change. In the Heal Kids Whole philosophy, we believe every child has an "Inner Healer". This is a practice of agency, giving children a mental "control room" where they can dial down pain, turn up confidence, and reclaim sovereignty over their physical and emotional responses.
The Soulful Science
Clinical Hypnosis is a recognized medical tool used by pediatricians, psychologists, and child life specialists worldwide.
During hypnosis, the brain enters a state of focused dissociation. Neuroimaging shows that hypnosis can actually change the activity in the anterior cingulate cortex, the part of the brain that decides how much "bother" a sensation or thought causes. By shifting this focus, we can literally change the child's neurological experience of reality.
What to Expect
A professional pediatric hypnosis session is collaborative, playful, and entirely transparent:
The "Pre-Talk": The practitioner explains that hypnosis is a "super-power of the mind" and that the child is always in control. There is no "going under"; it is more like being "deeply in".
The Induction: Using a favorite hobby or story, the practitioner guides the child into a relaxed, focused state—often by having them imagine they are on a "Magic Carpet" or in a "Secret Garden".
Therapeutic Suggestions: Once focused, the practitioner uses metaphors to help the child solve their specific challenge (e.g., "Imagine your bladder is like a very smart guard who wakes you up when it's full").
Self-Hypnosis Training: The most important part of the session is teaching the child how to do this for themselves, ensuring they carry the "remote control" home with them.
The Golden Window
A targeted focus for kids aged 6-12
School age kids are naturally in a state of "fluid consciousness"—they move in and out of imaginative play easily, making them the most successful candidates for hypnosis:
The "Magic Dial" for Pain: For the 9-year-old with recurring tummy aches, hypnosis teaches them to visualize a dial in their brain that can turn the "volume" of the discomfort down to a one.
The Sleep Sanctuary: For the 11-year-old whose anxiety keeps them awake, creating a "Mental Movie" of a safe, peaceful place helps the brain transition into a sleep-ready state.
The "I Can" Anchor: For the 12-year-old facing social or academic pressure, "Post-Hypnotic Suggestions" can be used to trigger a feeling of calm and capability just by touching two fingers together.
